A Theology of Video Games has been something of an experiment for me.
Although I’ve done copious amounts of writing on elements of spiritual formation, including pieces published on outlets like Crosswalk, Patheos, and The Christian Post, I’ve never written about anything related to video games, despite the fact that playing them has been my longest-standing hobby.
And to say it has been a “success” would be an understatement.
Our Substack is still a baby (less than four months old) and this was just an experimental offshoot that has garnered more than 100 weekly readers and our most read article (Video Games as Art).
But now I’ve written on all the topics I had planned regarding video games, and I want to hear from you all about where this should go next.
I could…
keep diving in on articles about gaming, like I’ve been doing
do video game reviews from a Spiritual Formation perspective (this will take time I wouldn’t keep a weekly cadence, but I could take game requests)
choose a new topic to dive deeper on in a new section, like music or basket weaving, or the mega-church
This poll will be open for about a week, so tell me what you think below.
Either way, I’m grateful to have had a place to start putting my thoughts on video games and spiritual formation into words. These posts have served as something like a rough draft on a small book I would like to write in the next year or two under the same name as these articles (A Theology of Video Games).
Over the next week I’ll get y’all’s thoughts on next steps, then I’ll drop back into your inbox with an update.
Thank you for all your support.
In Christ,
Phil Snyder
